{"id":18467,"date":"2022-10-27T15:37:46","date_gmt":"2022-10-27T13:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.laffineur.com\/renewing-authorization-of-potassium-diformate-as-an-animal-feed-additive\/"},"modified":"2022-10-27T15:42:46","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T13:42:46","slug":"renewing-authorization-of-potassium-diformate-as-an-animal-feed-additive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.laffineur.com\/en\/renewing-authorization-of-potassium-diformate-as-an-animal-feed-additive\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewing authorization of potassium diformate as an animal feed additive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 5 August 2022, the European Commission adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022\/1374, authorizing the preservative potassium diformate for piglets and pigs.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, this additive was authorized for all animal species in Implementing Regulation (EU) 492\/2006.<\/p>\n<p>The application for renewal of potassium diformate originally sought use for all species, but that was withdrawn and replaced with use for pigs only.<\/p>\n<p>Thereafter, an investigation by the EFSA Panel on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/science\/scientific-committee-and-panels\/feedap\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/science\/scientific-committee-and-panels\/feedap\">Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed<\/a> (FEEDAP), it was determined that potassium diformate was safe for pigs in specific amounts, depending on the age and type: 12,000 mg\/kg for sows and 6,000 mg\/kg for pigs and piglets.<\/p>\n<p>FEEDAP could not conclude on the safety of the additive for other animals and also stated there was no need for further investigation of efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission determines in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022\/1374 that the additive meets the requirements for safe consumption established in Regulation (EC) 1831\/2003 insofar as it:<\/p>\n<p>(i) has no adverse effects on animals, humans, or the environment,<\/p>\n<p>(ii) favorably affects the characteristics of the product or the animal,<\/p>\n<p>(iii) satisfies the nutritional needs of animals, and<\/p>\n<p>(iv) is not an antibiotic.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, potassium diformate is added to the list of authorized additives in Regulation (EC) 1831\/2003, under the category \u201ctechnological additives\u201d, more specifically \u201cpreservatives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The new Implementing Regulation also repeals Implementing Regulation (EU) 492\/2006.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 5 August 2022, the European Commission adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022\/1374, authorizing the preservative potassium diformate for piglets and pigs.
